About Bruichladdich
In previous collaborations, the focus has been on sustainable brands, products, and practices. Now, another significant player joins that list: Bruichladdich.
Located on the west coast of Loch Indaal on the Isle of Islay, Bruichladdich takes its name from the Gaelic word meaning “shore bank.”
Since 2020, this renowned distillery has held B Corp certification, a particularly challenging accomplishment in the distilling industry, making it the first Scotch and gin producer to achieve this distinction.
The Mission
After officially receiving its B-Corp certification in May 2020 with a score of 100.7, Bruichladdich established 4 key pillars to guide its commitment to a more sustainable and positive impact. These pillars include:
Packaging and Waste:
The distillery is committed to using less and reusing more.
Energy and Emissions:
The distillery is focused on reducing carbon emissions and adopting greener energy sources.
Community:
Bruichladdich works closely with the local community, fostering a passionate team dedicated to the craft.
Agriculture and Biodiversity:
Supporting local farmers and preserving the island’s natural biodiversity is a core mission.
The Classic Laddie
Head Distiller Adam Hannett expressed pride in these traditions, stating:
“We are proud of our traditions but are not bound by them. Each Bruichladdich expression brings to life the unique story of the people, the land, and the barley from which it was distilled.”
This philosophy is key to understanding the Classic Laddie. Rather than following a fixed recipe, Bruichladdich’s approach is shaped by the barley’s variety and provenance, which influence the spirit each year. The distillery also sources an evolving range of casks, contributing to the rich diversity of flavors in their warehouses. Rather than striving for absolute consistency, each batch of the Classic Laddie is unique and subtly different.
The creation of the Classic Laddie is one of the most complex and demanding tasks overseen by Adam. He hand-selects and blends the finest spirits, ensuring the signature fruity and floral Bruichladdich style. The process is rigorous and requires meticulous sampling, evaluating the spirit’s nose, taste, and mouthfeel. This careful decision-making process spans weeks, with each batch composed only after numerous checks and re-evaluations.
Bruichladdich bottles the Classic Laddie at 50% ABV, higher than the industry average of 40-46%. This ensures the full flavor of the Scottish barley shines through.
A Fresh Outfit
The distillery has recently revamped the packaging of The Classic Laddie with the aim of reducing the single malt whisky’s carbon emissions by 65%. This new sexy design also features a bottle that is 32% lighter and made from 60% recycled glass. The lighter weight allows for more bottles to be transported per pallet, reducing the number of distribution vehicles on the road.
The newly designed Classic Laddie bottle marks a significant shift for Bruichladdich. This change goes beyond a simple redesign; it represents a new direction for the brand and reflects its commitment to operating as a values-driven business.
Tasting Notes
The nose is sweet with hints of honeyed barley, orange blossom, and fresh white grapes, along with a light touch of salty ocean air. Tasting it brings out red apples, caramel, and candied almonds, with a bit of peppery kick and a smooth brown sugar finish.
The Spicy Pineapple Syrup
If pineapple has taught us anything, it’s that when used in places that are NOT pizza, it can actually add some delicious twists! 🤌🏼🍕
This recipe is perfect for showcasing the floral and fruity notes of the Classic Laddie, adding a touch of acidity and playful fruitiness.
Here’s the recipe:
- Chop half a fresh pineapple and add it to a pot.
- Add 300g of caster sugar.
- Let the sugar melt slowly over low heat.
- Add 1 teaspoon of chili flakes, 2 star anise, and 1 cinnamon stick, and stir gently.
- As the sugar melts, add 500ml of water and bring to a boil.
- Once it boils, reduce to a simmer and cook for 30 minutes.
- Let it cool down, then strain through a filter and bottle.
Bartender tip: Char and use the caramelised pineapple cuts after the process as a garnish, or incorporate them into your desserts! (Not on Pizza). 🤌🏼🍕
